Nighttime closures are planned for the Fairfax County Parkway median at Burke Centre Parkway from December 1 to December 5, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. The closures will allow for stormwater pipe installation as part of the ongoing widening project on the southern section of Fairfax County Parkway.
The scheduled closures will affect both the median and southbound lanes. Southbound Fairfax County Parkway will be reduced to one lane at the intersection during nighttime hours from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., starting Monday night, December 1, through Saturday morning, December 6.
Traffic detours will be in place during these times. Drivers heading southbound on Fairfax County Parkway who wish to turn left onto eastbound Burke Centre Parkway will be directed via northbound Route 123 (Ox Road) back to eastbound Burke Centre Parkway. Those traveling westbound on Burke Centre Parkway intending to turn left onto southbound Fairfax County Parkway will need to use northbound Fairfax County Parkway and make a U-turn at Popes Head Road before returning south.
Drivers are advised that delays are expected and alternate routes should be considered.
The widening project involves expanding about two miles of Fairfax County Parkway from four lanes to six between Route 123 and Nomes Court/Ladues End Lane. Other improvements include installing concrete median barriers along curves, constructing a missing shared-use path segment between Route 123 and Burke Centre Parkway, and making changes at the intersection with Burke Centre Parkway such as adding a new westbound free-flow right-turn lane.
Additional upgrades include building a grade-separated crossing for bicyclists and pedestrians just north of Burke Centre Parkway, improving the interchange with Route 123 by widening ramps and adding turn lanes, and enhancing sound walls along sections of the parkway.
Project completion is expected in mid-2027. This work is adjacent to other projects: the northern widening project that began in June 2024 with similar completion timing, and an interchange project at Popes Head Road started in December 2023 with anticipated completion in late 2026. When all three projects are finished, there will be six continuous through lanes along an eight-mile stretch from Route 123 to Rugby Road, eliminating current traffic bottlenecks near Popes Head Road.
A temporary speed limit of 45 mph remains in effect between Route 123 and I-66 for this construction zone until work concludes on both this project and the northern widening effort.
