Fairfax County announced on May 1 that it will celebrate Building Safety Month with a resource fair on Wednesday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Herrity Building. The event is organized by Land Development Services and aims to highlight the importance of safe building practices under this year’s theme, “Built to Last.”

Building Safety Month is an opportunity for residents to learn how homes and public spaces are kept secure and resilient. The county says the event will include hands-on activity tables hosted by Land Development Services and partner agencies, as well as snacks, giveaways, and prizes.

Children attending the fair can participate in storytime with a librarian at 11 a.m., while all visitors can explore large vehicles during Touch-a-Truck activities featuring a firetruck, flusher truck, and electric trash truck. Sully District Supervisor Kathy Smith will deliver the official Building Safety Month proclamation at 10:30 a.m.

Homeowners interested in learning more about safety regulations can attend two free classes: Building Permits 101 at 11 a.m., followed by Deck Details Bootcamp at 12:30 p.m., both held in Room 106. These sessions are designed to explain permit processes and essential safety rules for home projects.

For those unable to attend in person, Fairfax County encourages residents to listen to LDS engineer Nick Polera discuss building codes on the “County Conversation” podcast or visit the LDS website for additional resources such as permit guides and contractor tips.
