A driver of an electric scooter was seriously injured in a crash involving a pickup truck at the intersection of Pocahontas Trail and Route 199, James City County Police said on May 5.
The incident highlights concerns about road safety for electric scooter users, especially regarding visibility and adherence to traffic laws.
According to the preliminary investigation by the James City County Police Crash Team, the scooter was traveling improperly in the left lane of Pocahontas Trail without lights or reflectors as it passed Route 199. The police said the scooter was struck by a pickup truck that was making a legal left turn onto Route 199. The operator of the scooter was transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
Police said that the investigation is ongoing and further details will be released as they become available.
As electric scooters become more common on local roads, authorities are urging both riders and drivers to exercise caution. The outcome of this investigation may influence future discussions about safety measures for alternative vehicles.
