Melody Cartwright, a Democratic candidate for Virginia’s House of Delegates, has publicly declared her support for gubernatorial candidate Jay Jones. This comes in the wake of reports that Jones sent violent texts concerning former Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert. Cartwright made her statement on the social media platform X.
“I stand with Jay Jones. Period. End of Statement,” said Cartwright, Democratic candidate for Virginia House of Delegates, District 48.
Following the publication of 2022 text messages attributed to Democratic attorney general nominee Jerrauld “Jay” Jones, which included violent hypotheticals directed at then-Speaker Todd Gilbert, the political landscape in Virginia for 2025 has been significantly impacted. According to coverage, Republicans have condemned the messages while some Democrats have expressed concern as campaigns adjust their messaging with just one month remaining before the general election. In this context, Cartwright’s public support for Jones has become part of the broader statewide narrative leading up to November.
The National Review reported screenshots from an August 2022 exchange where Jones allegedly described a hypothetical “two bullets” scenario, stating he would choose then-Speaker Gilbert “every time.” Additional remarks reportedly referenced suffering within Gilbert’s family. GOP Delegate Carrie Coyner, who received these messages, called the rhetoric disqualifying. Subsequent reports indicate that Jones apologized to Gilbert and his family. These details have fueled ongoing debates over candidates’ fitness for office and political discourse in Virginia as campaigns approach their final stages.
Cartwright’s message was posted on her campaign X account @melforhd48 on October 6, 2025. It read: “I stand with Jay Jones. Period. End of Statement.” The post quickly gained traction as activists and organizations responded in real-time, linking a local House district contest with the contentious attorney-general race. Public engagement metrics highlighted how down-ballot candidates are becoming involved in statewide controversies through fast-spreading online platforms.
Melody Cartwright is running as a Democratic candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates in District 48, which includes Martinsville and parts of Henry and Pittsylvania counties. A lifelong resident of Southside Virginia, she focuses on issues such as job creation, housing affordability, and well-funded public schools. Despite losing a 2024 special election to Republican Eric Phillips, she continues her campaign emphasizing economic revitalization and constituent services under the banner of being a “human rights defender.” The next general election is scheduled for November 4, 2025.
