Weather permitting, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close the northbound right lane of Route 29 between Clifton Road/Stringfellow Road (Route 645) and Sandy Point Lane (Route 7983) on Thursday, Dec. 11; Friday, Dec. 12; and Monday, Dec. 15 through Friday, Dec. 19. The closures will take place each day from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., as part of ongoing paving work for the Route 29 widening project.
VDOT has advised drivers to expect delays during these times and to consider using alternate routes.
The Route 29 widening project aims to improve safety, traffic flow, and accessibility for both bicyclists and pedestrians along the stretch between Union Mill Road and Buckleys Gate Drive. Planned improvements include reconstructing and expanding a 1.5-mile segment from four lanes to six, correcting vertical alignment for better sight distance, adding shared-use paths on both sides of Route 29, and connecting with pedestrian and bicycle trails at the Fairfax County Parkway/West Ox Road interchange.
The project is expected to be completed in spring 2026.
