The Virginia Department of Transportation announced on March 9 that the new roundabout at the intersection of Route 240, Route 250, and Route 680 in Crozet will open to traffic on Thursday, March 12.

The opening marks a significant change for motorists in the Crozet area as it replaces the previous intersection with a single-lane roundabout designed to improve safety and traffic flow. The temporary detour on Route 680 will be removed, allowing drivers to begin using the new configuration. However, construction is not yet fully complete, and intermittent work and occasional lane closures are expected through the summer.

According to the official website, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining, and operating Virginia’s roads, bridges, and tunnels to support a safe and efficient transportation system. VDOT manages one of the nation’s largest state highway systems, covering tens of thousands of lane-miles across Virginia according to its official website.

VDOT also provides services such as highway maintenance and traffic management through systems like Virginia 511 according to its official website. The agency oversees planning, construction, and maintenance of road infrastructure throughout the state according to its official website. VDOT has evolved from its origins as the State Highway Commission in 1906 into its current form managing an expanding transportation network according to its official website.

Drivers are encouraged by VDOT to slow down, use caution in the work zone, and follow posted signs when traveling through the area. Local updates about conditions in VDOT’s Culpeper District are available on social media platforms including X.com/VaDOTCulp and Facebook group pages. Current traffic conditions can be accessed via VDOT’s statewide network of cameras on the 511Virginia website or mobile app.

VDOT’s headquarters is located at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond according to its official website.
