The Virginia Department of Transportation announced on Mar. 9 that the new roundabout at the intersection of Route 240, Route 250, and Route 680 in Crozet will open to traffic on Friday, March 13. The opening was postponed from its original date due to rain in the forecast for Thursday.
The opening of the roundabout is expected to improve safety and traffic flow in the Crozet area by replacing the previous intersection with a single-lane design. This change is part of ongoing efforts by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to enhance transportation infrastructure across the state.
As part of this milestone, VDOT said that the temporary detour on Route 680 will be removed and motorists will begin traveling through the new roundabout. While it will be open and functional for traffic, construction activity and occasional lane closures are expected to continue at the intersection through summer as crews complete remaining work.
Drivers are encouraged to slow down, use caution in the work zone, and follow posted signs when traveling through the area. Local updates about conditions in VDOT’s Culpeper District are available on social media platforms such as X.com/VaDOTCulp and Facebook. Current statewide traffic conditions can be accessed via VDOT’s network of traffic cameras, the free VDOT 511 mobile app, or by calling 511 from any phone in Virginia.
According to the official website, VDOT is responsible for building, maintaining, and operating Virginia’s roads, bridges, and tunnels to support a safe and efficient transportation system. The agency manages one of the nation’s largest state highway systems covering tens of thousands of lane-miles across Virginia according to its official website. Services provided include highway maintenance, traffic management through systems like Virginia 511, and oversight of land-use permits along state routes according to its official website.
VDOT serves as a state agency overseeing planning, construction, and maintenance for roadways throughout Virginia according to its official website. The department developed from a State Highway Commission established in 1906 into its current form managing expanding transportation infrastructure according to its official website. Its headquarters are located at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond according to its official website.
The completion of this project marks another step toward improving travel safety and efficiency for residents and visitors in Albemarle County.
