Contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Southeastern Public Service Authority Interchange Improvements Project will begin a continuous single-lane closure on Route 58 west in Suffolk as early as March 23. The right lane will be closed near the weigh station and continue for about half a mile, ending at the SPSA entrance at Bob Foeller Drive. This closure is expected to last through late spring 2026.
The lane reduction is needed to allow pavement widening and construction of a ramp and flyover tie-in at the SPSA facility. To install concrete barriers for the temporary lane closure, two westbound lanes will be closed overnight from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. for several nights beginning as early as March 23. Additional intermittent closures or brief stoppages may occur in both directions during the construction phase.
Motorists are urged to drive carefully and remain alert for construction vehicles entering and exiting the work zone. The speed limit on Route 58 remains reduced to 50 miles per hour through the area under construction. All work is dependent on weather and scheduling, so dates may change.
The SPSA Interchange Improvements Project aims to improve safety by building a dedicated flyover ramp for eastbound traffic on Route 58 entering Bob Foeller Drive, closing an existing at-grade median crossing, and eliminating crossover conflicts with westbound traffic. The new flyover ramp will merge with the current westbound entrance to the SPSA facility from Route 58.
