Construction commenced on May 19 for a new roundabout at the intersection of U.S. 250, Route 240, and Route 680 in Albemarle County. The project is managed by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and aims to enhance traffic safety and efficiency at this busy junction.
During the construction period, VDOT will close Route 680 to through traffic between U.S. 250 and Route 802, implementing a detour via Route 240 to Route 802 from mid-July through December 2025. More details about the detours can be found on VDOT’s website.
According to data from 2023, approximately 7,300 vehicles use Route 240 near the intersection daily. U.S. 250 sees about 12,000 vehicles, while Route 680 carries around 540 vehicles each day.
Additional safety measures during construction include speed reductions: from 55 mph to 45 mph along Route 250 and from 45 mph to 35 mph along Route 240 near the construction zone. Lane closures are permitted from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., requiring motorists to reduce speed and remain alert.
Curtis Contracting, Inc., based in West Point, Va., is handling the $5.2 million project as part of a larger initiative involving five intersections across Albemarle County. These projects aim to create innovative intersections that reduce delays and improve safety for all road users by minimizing conflict points and enhancing access for pedestrians and bicyclists.
The design-build contract for these improvements totals $42.3 million, with construction beginning at the current site and concluding in fall/winter of 2027.
VDOT highlights that design-build contracts offer streamlined communication between parties involved, faster completion times, increased collaboration, and cost savings.
Updates on local conditions can be accessed via VDOT’s Culpeper District social media pages or through real-time information available on the VDOT website or mobile app.
