Sub-freezing temperatures in the Richmond District are slowing efforts by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to clear secondary roads. While most neighborhood streets have been plowed or treated, VDOT reports that ongoing cold weather is making it difficult for snow-removal equipment to be fully effective. When overnight temperatures fall below freezing, any progress made during the day can be undone as refreezing occurs.
Most low-volume secondary roads in neighborhoods remain in moderate condition, meaning that snow or ice covers major portions of these roadways. Drivers are advised to proceed slowly and exercise extra caution until they reach roads that have been completely cleared.
VDOT continues 24-hour operations in the Richmond District but is shifting more resources to daytime hours when equipment and treatments work best against icy conditions. Nighttime crews focus on reapplying sand and abrasives to improve safety for morning commuters.
Motorists can get updated information on road and traffic conditions or report hazards by visiting 511.vdot.virginia.gov, using VDOT’s free mobile 511 app, or calling 511 from any phone within Virginia. For additional questions or to report hazardous road conditions, VDOT’s 24-hour Customer Service Center can be reached at my.vdot.virginia.gov or by calling 800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623).
