Chesterfield County School Board member Dot Heffron responded to the assassination of conservative speaker Charlie Kirk by comparing Kirk to a Nazi and saying she remembers “when we used to be okay” with shooting them.

“I remember when we used to be okay with shooting Nazis,” according to a Heffron Instagram post initially shared by X user Matthew Hurtt.

Heffron’s comments have since been widely reported.

After her remarks, Heffron said she would resign on Dec. 31, 2025. Gov. Glenn Youngkin, however, said, Heffron should resign immediately.

“Let’s be perfectly clear: a school board member suggested it was ok to shoot people for their beliefs,” said Youngkin.

“She must resign immediately. Not tomorrow, not next month, immediately. It is beyond unacceptable for the Chesterfield County School Board to push off this resignation till December,” said Youngkin. “No student, no parent, no teacher nor administrator should be exposed to this violent thinking.”

Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears also called for Heffron’s immediate resignation, saying Heffron “has no place on a school board.”

When 48 hours had passed since Heffron’s reported remarks without a Spanberger comment, Earle-Sears said on Facebook that, “it’s been more than 48 hours, and Abigail Spanberger is nowhere to be found.”

“No statement. No condemnation,” said Earle-Sears. “No removal of the endorsement from Dot Heffron, who celebrated Charlie Kirk’s assassination, saying it’s ‘OK to shoot Nazis.’”

Spanberger has since released a statement, saying, “I condemn any efforts to justify or minimize the horrific murder of Charlie Kirk,” reported WTVR News

School board races are officially non-partisan, but Heffron was endorsed by the Chesterfield County Democratic Party, reported Ballotpedia, and her campaign committee has received $2,626 from the Democratic Party of Virginia.

Heffron also endorsed Virginia’s Democrat gubernatorial nominee Abigail Spanberger (D), according to a post on Spanberger’s Instagram account, which remained live as of Sept. 17.

Youngkin asked in Sept. 16 X post why Spanberger won’t renounce Heffron’s endorsement and “demand her immediate resignation” from the school board.
