The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams recorded three second-place finishes at the 2026 Penn Relays in Philadelphia on April 25. The event took place at Franklin Field.
These results are significant as they reflect strong performances by several Virginia athletes against national competition. Achieving runner-up spots in multiple events highlights the team’s competitiveness this season.
Janae Profit finished second in the College Women’s Discus Throw Championship with a final round throw of 53.56 meters (175-9). Brooke Lumpkin secured another runner-up position in the College Women’s Shot Put Championship, marking 16.23 meters (53-3) on her penultimate attempt. The quartet of Cate DeSousa, Gillian Bushee, Tatum David, and Stella Kermes also placed second in the College Women’s 4×1500 Championship of America with a time of 17:18.80.
Other notable performances included Will Daley, Brett Gardner, Gary Martin, and Nate Mountain finishing fourth in the College Men’s 4xMile Championship of America with a time of 16:19.57. Grace Smith took fifth place in the College Women’s Long Jump Championship after reaching a distance of 6.05 meters (19-10.25) on her first attempt. In men’s discus, Jeremiah Nubbe was among the top ten finishers with a throw of 51.99 meters (170-7). The team comprising Harison Witt, Henry Acorn, Sam Rodman, and Tyler Edson finished fourth in the College Men’s 4x800m Championship of America clocking a time of 7:14.71.
At the Charlotte Invitational held concurrently, Samantha Romano matched her season best by clearing 4.01 meters (13-1.75) to finish second in women’s pole vault while Madison Townsend placed fifth after clearing 3.86 meters (12-8).
Looking ahead, Virginia’s track and field athletes are scheduled to compete at both the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton on May 1-2 and Hill City Twilight in Lynchburg on May 2.
