The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close Route 672 (Carys Creek Road) at the bridge over Able Creek in Fluvanna County starting Monday, October 6. The closure is to allow for rehabilitation work on the existing bridge structure. The location of the bridge is about 0.2 miles west of U.S. 15 (James Madison Highway).
According to VDOT, weather permitting, the road will stay closed to through traffic at the bridge until Thursday, December 18.
The planned work includes removing the current steel beam and timber deck, widening and repairing the bridge abutments, and installing a new superstructure with steel beams and a timber deck. The existing bridge has a width of 13 feet 9 inches and is posted with a 15-ton weight limit. After rehabilitation, it will be able to carry all legal loads with an increased width of about 17 feet 7 inches.
“Message boards were placed on Route 672 on Monday, Sept. 22, to notify motorists of the upcoming closure,” VDOT stated.
A signed detour will be set up during construction for through traffic. Southbound U.S. 15 drivers can reach points west of the closure by continuing five miles to Fork Union, turning right onto Route 6 (West River Road), then right onto Route 671 (Gold Mine Road), which leads back to Carys Creek Road. For points east of the closure, motorists should use this detour in reverse.
Local residents will still have access to driveways within the closed section.
