Katrin Brzyszkowska set a new Virginia Tech outdoor shot put record at the Jim Green Invitational in Lexington, Kentucky, according to a May 2 announcement from the program. Eight other Virginia Tech athletes also moved into the school’s all-time top ten lists during competition at the Hill City Twilight in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Brzyszkowska recorded a throw of 17.40 meters (57 feet, 1 inch), which secured her position as Virginia Tech’s all-time outdoor shot put leader and earned her first place at the event. In track events, Kenza Elakari finished second in the women’s 800 meters invite with a personal-best time of 2:05.89, placing her among the school’s top ten performers.
Dylan DeCambre ran a personal-best of 1:47.21 for third place in the men’s 800 meters invite and joined Elakari on Virginia Tech’s all-time list. In the women’s 1,500 meters invite at Hill City Twilight, Katie Johnson won with a personal-best time of 4:14.40 to move up to No.8 on the program’s list; Sophia Gorriarán was second and entered at No.9 with a time of 4:15.94; Jule Lindner completed an all-Hokies podium sweep with her own best mark.
For men’s distance events, George Couttie placed second in the men’s 1,500 meters with an outdoor-best of 3:37.01—good for No.2 on Virginia Tech’s list—followed by Nick Plant (third) and Sam Idiens (No.10). Ryan Chevalier and Garrett Winter led another strong showing by finishing first and second in the men’s invitational five thousand meters with personal bests that rank them sixth and seventh respectively on school records; Linus Chepkochei rounded out another podium sweep for Hokies runners.
In women’s distance races, Kylie Bonser took second place in her event with a career-best performance.
Looking ahead, Virginia Tech reports that its sprints, multisport athletes and pole vaulters will compete next at Duke Twilight in Durham.
