The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has released its weekly traffic alert for the Bristol District, covering the period from June 23 to June 29, 2025. This update aims to inform motorists about ongoing highway construction and maintenance projects in southwestern Virginia.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution when traveling through work zones due to potential changes in traffic patterns and the presence of slow-moving or stopped traffic. For real-time traffic information, travelers can contact VDOT’s 511 service or visit their website.

Several projects are currently underway on Interstate 81. In Smyth County, paving operations near mile marker 39 will result in 24-hour lane closures from June 22-25. A widening project is also ongoing in Washington County between exits 10 and 7 southbound and from exit 7 northbound. Additionally, a truck climbing lane near mile marker 34 in Smyth County is nearing completion with paving scheduled by June 20.

In Bristol, improvements are being made at exit 5 with the widening of Route 11 and I-81 off-ramps. Wythe County sees efforts to extend a deceleration lane at exit 81 and construct an auxiliary lane between exits 73 and 72. Bland County is replacing a bridge over Route 606 at exit 62 on I-77 northbound, while Wythe County is adding a truck climbing lane on I-77 northbound between mile markers 30.6 and exit 32.

Maintenance activities on Interstates 81 and 77 include daytime bridge deck repairs, nighttime installations of temporary traffic count stations, inspections, and bridge work across various locations.

On primary highways and high-traffic secondary roads, several projects are active across Buchanan, Dickenson, Scott, Tazewell, Wise, and Wythe counties. These include bridge constructions, road widenings, intersection improvements, and safety enhancements.

Motorists should pay attention to signs and message boards throughout these areas for any detours or changes in traffic patterns due to ongoing construction activities.
