The Virginia Department of Transportation announced on Mar. 26 that the southbound exit 45 on ramp to Interstate 81 in Marion will be closed from 7 a.m. Monday, March 30 through approximately noon Friday, April 3 due to a sewer line project in the Town of Marion.

The closure is expected to affect traffic flow in the area, and motorists are advised to plan alternate routes during this period. In addition to the ramp closure, drivers should be aware of lane closures on Route 16 eastbound for repairs.

According to the official website, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining and operating Virginia’s roads, bridges and tunnels to support a safe and efficient transportation system according to the official website. VDOT manages one of the nation’s largest state highway systems with tens of thousands of lane-miles across Virginia according to the official website.

VDOT also provides services such as highway maintenance and traffic management through systems like Virginia 511, as well as oversight of land-use permits along state routes according to the official website. The agency oversees planning, construction and maintenance for roadways, bridges and tunnels throughout Virginia according to the official website.

The department has its headquarters at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond and developed from its origins as a State Highway Commission formed in 1906 according to the official website.

Motorists are encouraged by VDOT officials to remain alert while traveling through work zones and adhere closely to posted signs during these temporary changes.
