The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will temporarily close Route 651, known as Sumerduck Road, in Fauquier County for bridge rehabilitation. The closure is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 16, and will affect the bridge over Rock Run. This bridge was originally constructed in 1933 and is situated approximately one mile west of U.S. 17, also known as Marsh Road.
During the construction period, Sumerduck Road will be inaccessible to through traffic. A detour has been arranged for drivers needing to travel west of the closure point. They should take U.S. 17 to Route 634/637 (Courtneys Corner Road) and then turn left onto Route 651. Eastbound travelers are advised to follow this detour in reverse order. Access to private properties on both sides of the work zone will remain open throughout the project.
The construction work involves replacing the bridge’s superstructure and expanding its deck width from 19 feet to 22 feet. The project aims to ensure that the rehabilitated bridge can support all legal loads once completed.
Weather permitting, VDOT anticipates completing the bridge rehabilitation by July 18.
