Preparations are in progress for a Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) project aimed at rehabilitating the Hampton Highway (Route 134) bridge over George Washington Memorial Highway (Route 17) in York County. Contractor crews have been implementing alternating single-lane closures on Route 17 as needed for bridge inspections ahead of construction activities starting later this month.
Kokosing Construction Company Inc. has been awarded a $5.1 million contract to carry out the bridge rehabilitation project. The work involves replacing the bridge deck and approach slabs, along with minor repairs to both the superstructure and substructure of the existing bridge.
The project’s completion is estimated for late 2026, although this timeline is subject to change due to weather and scheduling factors.
Starting as early as mid-July, there will be a long-term closure affecting northbound traffic from Route 134 to Route 17 south throughout the construction period. A signed detour will direct northbound Route 134 traffic to access Route 17 south via Victory Boulevard. The on-ramp and bridge from Route 17 south to Route 134 will remain open for southbound traffic, while the northbound lane on Route 134 to Route 17 north will stay open.
During construction, motorists should anticipate periodic lane closures on Route 17 near the Route 134 bridge. Motorists will be informed of any additional significant lane closures or traffic shifts that may occur during the project. VDOT aims to minimize impacts and mitigate traffic issues where possible, ensuring access is maintained for local businesses and residences.
