Rock Hill Church Road in Stafford County is now open to traffic following bridge maintenance over Aquia Creek. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) had closed Route 644, known as Rock Hill Church Road, starting Monday, June 16, for crews to perform necessary maintenance work on the temporary single-lane bridge. This closure was set between Route 671 (Van Horn Lane) and Route 645 (Dunbar Drive), with an expected reopening by late Thursday, June 19, weather permitting.
During the closure, a detour was implemented using Route 610 (Garrisonville Road), Route 643 (Joshua Road), and Route 627 (Mountainview Road). Message boards were placed in advance to notify motorists of the road closure. VDOT reports that approximately 2,000 vehicles travel daily on Rock Hill Church Road.
Looking ahead, a full bridge replacement project is planned. A new two-lane bridge is scheduled for construction advertisement in December 2025, with work commencing in 2026. The $6.5 million project will again necessitate the closure of Rock Hill Church Road between Dunbar Drive and Van Horn Lane during construction.
The current temporary bridge was installed in fall 2020 after inspections revealed significant deterioration in major structural elements. This installation allows the road to remain operational while plans for the permanent bridge are finalized and funded.
