Nighttime traffic disruptions are expected on Interstate 81 near Harrisonburg due to bridge demolition work scheduled from June 9 to June 12, 2025. The Virginia State Police will oversee slow-roll closures between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. each day, guiding traffic at reduced speeds to create gaps for crane operations.
The slow rolls, designed to facilitate the safe placement of steel beams, will occur northbound starting at mile marker 241.6 near Mount Crawford and southbound at mile marker 253, just north of Harrisonburg. Temporary ramp closures are planned at exit 243 (Route 11 south) and exit 245 (Port Republic Road) northbound, as well as exit 251 (Route 11 north) southbound.
This operation is part of ongoing construction at the Interstate 81 exit 247 interchange in Harrisonburg. The project includes replacing two Route 33 bridges over I-81 and two railway bridges west of the interchange, with completion expected in summer 2026.
Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) awarded a $43.3 million contract for this project to Triton Construction Inc., based in St. Albans, West Virginia. A work-zone speed limit of 25 miles per hour is enforced on Route 33 throughout the project’s duration.
VDOT advises that all scheduled work is weather-dependent and subject to change, with updates provided as necessary. For real-time traffic alerts and traveler information, individuals can dial 511 or visit VDOT’s online platforms.
