Junior right-hander Brett Renfrow pitched eight scoreless innings on April 24 as the Virginia Tech baseball team defeated NC State, 4-0, in the series opener at English Field.
The win marks Virginia Tech’s first Atlantic Coast Conference shutout since 2023. The result is significant for the Hokies as it extends their recent run of form, giving them five wins in their last six games and helping improve their conference record.
Renfrow threw a total of 108 pitches, including 76 strikes, allowing only three hits—one on the game’s opening pitch—and matching his career-long outing. He faced 29 batters and struck out nine for the second consecutive Friday while reaching just three three-ball counts. His performance limited NC State’s offense and provided stability for his team throughout the game.
Virginia Tech built an early lead with Sam Gates hitting an RBI triple in the second inning and Ethan Ball delivering a two-run home run in the third. Gates added another extra-base hit in the fourth inning but was left stranded after a ground-rule double. In the fifth inning, Ball drew a nine-pitch walk that helped set up freshman Willie Hurt’s RBI single for Virginia Tech’s fourth run.
Reliever Chase Swift closed out NC State by striking out two of three batters he faced in the ninth inning. Together with Renfrow, Swift secured Virginia Tech’s first ACC shutout victory since April 28, 2023.
Looking ahead, Virginia Tech will play for the series against NC State on Saturday, April 25 at noon Eastern Time at English Field. Probable starting pitchers are Cooper Consiglio for Virginia Tech and Logan Eisenreich for NC State.
