Most roads in the Fredericksburg, Northern Neck, and Middle Peninsula areas are currently clear of snow. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has reported that bare pavement is visible across all lanes and shoulders of Interstate 95 as well as along major roads within the 14-county Fredericksburg District.
Crews have been focusing on plowing and treating any remaining secondary roads and subdivision streets. However, with wet pavement combined with below-freezing temperatures, black ice may develop overnight. Moisture from melted snow and slush is expected to refreeze.
VDOT crews will continue to monitor road conditions closely and apply treatment materials where necessary. Icy conditions are more likely to form in shaded areas and along flood-prone roadways. Crews will patrol overnight for slick spots and use treatment materials to melt ice, improving traction for vehicle tires.
Motorists should plan for additional travel time during the night and into tomorrow morning due to potential slick road conditions. Ice formation is particularly likely on bridges, overpasses, ramps, subdivision streets, hills, and curves.
The VDOT Fredericksburg District manages snow removal from nearly 12,000 total lane miles and 20 commuter lots.
