The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close Route 745, known as Arrowhead Valley Road, in Albemarle County starting Monday, January 12. The closure is necessary to replace the bridge superstructure. The work zone is about 0.9 miles from U.S. 29 at mailbox 1855 on the north end and about 0.7 miles from U.S. 29 at mailbox 1987 on the south end.

The current bridge has a steel beam timber deck superstructure with an 18-ton weight limit. It will be replaced with precast concrete beams that can carry all legal loads.

Message boards were set up last week at the bridge to inform drivers of the upcoming closure and construction dates. Additional boards will remain on Route 745 near U.S. 29 during the closure for ongoing updates.

Local traffic will be able to access Route 745 from either side of the closure to reach properties within the project area.

“Weather permitting, the bridge is expected to reopen to traffic by Thursday, Jan. 30,” VDOT stated.

VDOT provides local updates about conditions in its Culpeper District on X.com/VaDOTCulp and the Culpeper District Facebook page. Current traffic conditions and travel information are available through VDOT’s statewide network of traffic cameras, the 511Virginia website, the free VDOT 511 mobile app, or by calling 511 from any phone in Virginia.

VDOT is responsible for planning, building, and maintaining transportation infrastructure across Virginia, including roads and bridges such as those in Albemarle County (official website). The agency manages one of the largest state-maintained highway systems in the United States and offers services like highway maintenance and public access to road condition data (official website).
