All lanes on I-64 east near Hampton Roads Center Parkway have reopened as of the morning of August 29, following bridge rehabilitation work. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) oversaw the project, which was part of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Newport News Segment. The reopening restores four lanes for motorists in this section.

A long-term single-lane closure and traffic shift are planned for I-64 west near Hampton Roads Center Parkway in 2026 to allow for additional bridge rehabilitation on the westbound overpass. VDOT stated that advance public notifications will be issued before any further long-term traffic impacts occur.

Drivers are urged to exercise caution when traveling through work zones, observe posted speed limits, follow lane markings and barrier guides, pay attention to digital message signs, and avoid distractions while driving.

VDOT recommends using its free 511 Virginia traffic tools or the Waze GPS app integrated with 511 to check current road and travel conditions. The 511Virginia website and mobile app provide information about construction updates, traffic incidents, congestion levels, access to traffic cameras, weather-related impacts, and more at https://www.511virginia.org/.

The HREL Newport News Segment covers approximately 11.5 miles along I-64 from just east of LaSalle Avenue in Hampton to 1.2 miles west of Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News. Within a stretch of about 10.5 miles—from just west of Jefferson Avenue to I-664—the existing HOV lane in each direction is being converted into an Express Lane alongside three general purpose lanes. For the final mile between I-664 and LaSalle Avenue, one general purpose lane will become an Express Lane in each direction next to two general purpose lanes.

“Motorists now have access to four lanes of travel in this portion of the I-64 east corridor.”

“Public notifications will be provided in advance of additional long-term traffic impacts.”

“Motorists are reminded to use caution when traveling near work zones, obey posted speed limits, follow lane markings and barrier guides, be alert to digital message signs and drive distraction-free.”

“Before hitting the road, consider using VDOT’s free 511 Virginia traffic tools, or the free 511-integrated Waze GPS app, to check for the most up-to-date road and travel conditions. VDOT’s 511Virginia website and mobile app offer information about construction, traffic, incidents, and congestion, as well as access to traffic cameras, weather-related impacts and more.”
