Jason Miyares, the Attorney General of Virginia, has reiterated his commitment to combating scams and abuse to ensure the safety and dignity of seniors in the state. This statement was made on X.

“As Attorney General, I’ve cracked down on scammers and abusers who target Virginia’s seniors and prey on the vulnerable,” said Jason Stuart Miyares, Virginia State Executive – Attorney General. “Virginia’s seniors deserve safety, dignity, and peace of mind—and I’ll never stop fighting to protect them.”

Virginia has bolstered its elder protection efforts in 2024 by inaugurating a dedicated Elder Abuse Investigation Center in Central Virginia and expanding TRIAD partnerships. These initiatives aim to educate and safeguard seniors, as reported by the Virginia Attorney General’s Office and Virginia Mercury. The programs support statewide outreach and enforcement efforts to address fraud, neglect, and identity theft targeting seniors.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Virginia recorded 3,841 elder fraud complaints with $106.6 million in losses among residents aged 60 and older in 2024. This places the state 11th nationally for elder fraud losses, highlighting the increasing challenge of scams and exploitation faced by seniors across the Commonwealth.

WalletHub ranks Virginia fifth nationally for elder-abuse protections, with a score of 53.44 out of 100. This is above the national average and ahead of most states except leaders like Massachusetts and Wisconsin. While approximately 10% of U.S. seniors experience abuse annually, Virginia’s coordinated efforts have led to improved outcomes; however, reported cases and financial losses remain significant.

According to Wikipedia, Jason Miyares is Virginia’s 48th attorney general and the first Latino to hold this office. With a background as a prosecutor and three-term member of the House of Delegates, Miyares has concentrated on senior protection by launching the Elder Abuse Investigation Center and increasing legal action against fraud and healthcare scams.
