Head Coach Adam Denton announced on Apr. 29 that Jesse Newton has joined the Richmond Spiders women’s soccer coaching staff ahead of the 2026 fall season.

Newton, originally from St. Petersburg, Florida, will serve as an assistant coach. She brings experience from collegiate, youth, and international levels, most recently working as an assistant coach and director of player development at Oakland University.

“We’re excited to welcome Jesse to the Spider family,” Denton said. “From the very beginning of the interview process, it was clear that she would be a great addition to our staff. Jesse is passionate, hardworking, detail-oriented and has a strong understanding of the challenges student-athletes face at a high-academic institution like Richmond. She is committed to developing our student-athletes not only as players, but more importantly as people. Jesse’s experience as both a player and a coach will be a tremendous asset to our program, and she will be involved in all aspects of the team, including individual player development, recruiting, scouting and training curriculum. Go Spiders!”

At Oakland University, Newton contributed to recruiting efforts and training sessions while also designing individualized development plans for players. She managed video analysis duties and helped improve the program’s conference standing with a run to the Horizon League semifinals.

Before joining Oakland University’s staff, Newton worked as a graduate assistant coach at Lynn University and remained active in youth soccer through roles with Michigan Jaguars FC and Olympic Development Program East Region.

“I’m incredibly honored and excited to join the University of Richmond women’s soccer coaching staff,” Newton said. “Coach Denton and his staff have built something special, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it. With his experience, competitive mindset and leadership, this program is continuing to grow toward a championship level. I’m beyond excited to bring my energy, passion and experience to Richmond and get to work.”

Newton played collegiately at Presbyterian College before using her fifth year at Lynn University while earning her master’s degree. She later played professionally for MSV Duisburg in Germany during the 2023-24 season where she appeared in 14 matches with two assists as a defender.

While overseas in Germany with MSV Duisburg’s U15 squad she also gained coaching experience by helping guide them toward winning their league championship.

Newton holds degrees from Presbyterian College (bachelor’s degree in history) and Lynn University (MBA). She has earned her U.S Soccer Federation “D” License while currently pursuing her “C” License.
